Media Review #8 – Student Job Search

Each month, Talent Propeller undertakes a review on a New Zealand media that can be used to place recruitment ads. This is designed to provide you with an unbiased opinion of the media under review, and help you to identify the best media options for recruiting candidates. This is media review #8: Student Job Search.

MEDIA:

Student Job Search

ABOUT THE MEDIA:

Student Job Search is an employment service focussed on introducing students to employers with job vacancies for short term or long term opportunities.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN – WHAT ADS WE RAN:

For this review, we ran the following campaigns:

  • Hydrorobics Instructor
  • Swim School Instructor
  • Summer Student Programme

OUR INITIAL FINDINGS:

Student Job Search has changed dramatically over the years. Originally, it was a job board where employers could post job opportunities and students could apply directly with you. This recently changed to a process whereby a Student Job Search representative ‘presents’ you with their top three students based on their selection criteria. This has moved them from a job board to more of a traditional recruitment agency model. Their services are however provided free of charge.

HOW APPLICATIONS ARE RECEIVED:

Applications are sent via email or can be accessed through the SJS portal. They do not offer the ability to link to your careers website or candidate management software.

QUANTITY OF CANDIDATES RECEIVED:

Poor - Overall SJS delivered less than 1% of candidates when compared with other media

QUALITY OF CANDIDATES RECEIVED:

Poor – of the few applications received to our roles, none were suitable for the position.

WHAT WE LIKED:

The concept is a good one, being able to target students would be effective for a variety of roles. Unfortunately, the technology and human systems behind this job board don’t enable it to deliver.

WHAT WE DIDN’T LIKE

The platform is complex to use and needs modernising. In addition, every advert requires manual intervention from a SJS Representative so it’s slow to get your advertisement live (up to two weeks in some instances). The SJS requirement for feedback on every campaign about where you eventually hired from is laborious and unrealistic for the everyday hiring manager.

OUR VERDICT:

There are other, more effective mediums to utilise to reach the student market. Even the ‘free’ price tag didn’t outweigh the cons.
